Here’s a texture you can use in your work.

1. Start a new document and make a circle with the ellipse tool. Lower the fill opacity to 50% or so and give your circle a stroke. That’s the basis for your twinkling light. Image

2. Turn your circle into a new brush.

3. Select your brush and open the Brushes palette. Play around with the Scattering and Shape Dynamics fields until you find something you like. Image 1, Image 2

4. Now, fill your canvas with a very dark color. Make a new layer and fill it with a bright, colorful gradient. Change the blending options to color/overlay

5. Pick a big brush size and drag it across your canvas. Go to Filter -> Gaussian Blur and blur it lots. Those will be your lights in the distance.

6. Make the brush a bit smaller and draw again. Blur again, slightly less. Repeat a few times, reducing the blur and brush size each time.

Lord Likely- the journal of a Victorian adventurer and his astonishing actions. Ornate titles and big serif headings allude to the past era.

kidd81 – a very colorful site, intent on grabbing attention. Bright colors and draggable graphics invite the visitors to play with it. The type feels hand-drawn, which makes it unique.

Information Highwayman – all the typeface choices are not overpowering and subtly beautiful so that they draw attention to the content.

Denise Chandler – bold, look at me header. This website introduces itself to the viewer right off the bat.

Carsonified – simple, 2-color palette draws attention and makes the interaction between graphic and type really elegant.

DesignWise – a mix of large typography and refreshing color palette show the fun character of this design studio while staying simple and professional at the same time.

Elysium Burns – combining an elaborate swooshy script with clean sans-serif font gives this site an extra bit of character.

Finch – the logo is really big. It works well, letting the viewer admire the finesse of each letterforma nd how it connects to the next. Those details would have been lost in a smaller version.

friendly duck – a small company with a big message. The type is friendly, simple graphics help focus on the writing.

Jam Hot – playful critters interact with simple sans-serif type set in all caps.

1. Take breaks often. Divide your time into 1-2 hour-long sessions and 15 minute breaks in between. It’ll help keep your enthusiasm longer and you won’t get tired so quickly.

2. Resist the urge to constantly check your email, Facebook and other social media sites. It’s a great time-sucker, especially if you end up following an interesting link – just for a minute – and then another and another. You won’t even notice how quickly time flies when you don’t have much of it to spare.

3. Either stay up late or wake up extra early if you have a lot of work to do, don’t do both. Find the time when you’re most productive and use it. Don’t force yourself to work when you’re sleepy and can barely keep your eyes open. You won’t end up with a great-looking project.

4. If you’re easily distracted, get software to help you stay focused. There are applications to disable other programs for a set amount of time or take up the whole screen to block out others. Several are mentioned on freelance folder 7 free & paid tools to help you work without distractions.

5. Take a day off at least once a week and do something fun. Take a walk, go to the movies, catch up on some books. It’s important to get re-energized once in a while.
